We’ve heard a million times how posture can affect your health, but what if we tell you that it can also affect your sexual health? If you think that your posture doesn’t affect anything other than your appearance, you are wrong. As it turns out, even bending over or having the wrong posture can lead to painful sex. Although it may seem unlikely, the connection between your body’s alignment and bedroom satisfaction is a topic that may need your attention. So, let’s understand how wrong posture causes painful sex and what you can do about it.

Sexuality and intimacy coach Pallavi Baranwal recently took to her Instagram to share some insights on how a bad posture can affect your sex life and tips to deal with it.

How posture causes painful sex?

Have you ever felt discomfort during sex? Several studies suggest that pain during sex is not an uncommon occurrence in women. In fact, the term used for this problem is dyspareunia, which refers to pain during intercourse. Sometimes it can be due to a condition called vaginismus. The National Health Service (NHS) UK defines vaginismus as the body’s automatic response to the fear of some or all forms of vaginal penetration. When this happens, you are unable to control how you respond to sex. Your vaginal muscles may automatically tighten whenever penetration is attempted.

Although there are many reasons why this happens, bad posture is one of them. According to Intimacy Coach, the way you sit can cause pain during intercourse. Many women suffer from painful sex but they do not know how much their posture affects their sex life. Experts post, “Most women who complain of painful sex (dyspareunia) have poor posture because their pelvic floor muscles have become weak and inflexible due to poor sitting, standing and walking posture.”

Stretching to Avoid Painful Sex Caused by Vaginismus

If you spend most of your day sitting in the wrong posture, you need to do some pelvic floor stretches to relieve this strain. Also, it helps you deal with conditions like vaginismus. Here are some stretches recommended by a sexuality instructor:

1. Seated Lateral Stretch

One of the best stretches to help re-align your pelvic muscles, the seated side stretch helps improve your spinal flexibility and enhance nerve function. Also, it is a good asana to improve breathing. Here is a step-by-step guide to perform the asana:

2. Happy Baby Pose

This pose helps to stretch the pelvic floor muscles and inner thigh. Experts recommend this exercise for those who are facing any pelvic floor problems.

  • Lie down on a mat with your legs bent at the knees.
  • Lift one leg up and grab your toes with your hand and lift the other leg and grab your toes.
  • Now open your knees and feet separately.
  • Don’t forget to inhale and exhale while stretching.

3. Seated 4 Stretch

The Sitting 4 Stretch will help you avoid sciatica pain, along with stretching the piriformis and pelvic muscles.

  • Begin by sitting on the edge of a chair.
  • Place your left ankle on your right thigh to make a figure 4.
  • Make sure your hips are square, your shoulders are down and your back is straight.
  • Now, try to press your crossed leg down gently but it should be below your thigh.
  • You can lean forward from the hips, keeping your back straight, for a deeper stretch.
  • You can rotate your upper body toward your legs for an even deeper stretch.
Bring your back to the starting position and repeat the same pose on the other side.

It’s important to know that everyone’s body is different, and the effect of incorrect posture on the sexual experience can vary. However, you can improve your posture by incorporating exercises, stretches and mindfulness. Also, make sure you talk with your healthcare provider before making any lifestyle changes.
